As silly as this whole video was, she really was in some serious pain over causing the death of the bird. It begs the question though, would you have rather her been at the other end of the spectrum; completely cold and unfeeling? I personally think both are dangerous extremes.

I once hit two birds with one car.

Three were gathered in the road just over an overpass so I couldn't see them and vice versa. As soon as we saw each other the three scattered into the air, but only one escaped and the others smashed into and bounced over my windshield leaving a gooey mess my wipers worked hard to clean.

My heart jumped and I felt (and still feel) bad for taking the lives of the little fellows, but mainly I just chalk it up to evolution in action. The strong survived.

Don't feel bad. Just pretend they were all planning the murder/rape of another bird.

I once accidentally killed a quail.
I was walking down the path to the backdoor and I guess the quail family gathered at the quail block didn't hear me because when I got right up on them they all freaked out and one of them flew a straight line right for the upstairs windows....THUNK. He flopped around for a while (which was disturbing) but he was gone.
We decided to honor the death so we dressed it and vaccum-sealed & froze the tiny carcass since people do eat these things. So tiny, though, if we're gonna have a meal of quail some day I'm gonna have to go out and scare a LOT more of them.
ha!

well, I am sorry, its not evolution because we are inserting a totally foreign new way of killing animals... I have always had a problem with this, and I believe many well considered people do. Its like aliens putting a death ray on you... is that evolution? didn't think so. Its a genocidal massacre, its murder justified by the inevitable; our enormous quality of life that has no space for the intricate fabric that makes nature.

I guess that is why its not eia...

It is exactly evolution. Birds will adapt to avoiding cars over generations by means of natural selection. This one is one of the many that are killed to make way for those that do avoid cars.

I believe you're thinking about UN-natural selection, where WE choose who survives to cultivate a certain behavior or biological state: see domesticated animals. This is not such a case.

I was had a nuthatch fall on me after running into a huge building and it acted much like that swallow. 30 minutes later it was fine. When birds brains get hit too hard they have a reset cycle they go through. That bird very well could have been fine 20-30 minutes later. If it didn't flap like it did I'd agree that it's neck was broken, but I'm not convinced.

Geez, when will people learn that we are a part of nature and not some abomination from hell...

And btw, I wonder if that girl reacts the same way every time she hits an insect with her windshield, bumper, side mirrors and...

It's definitely evolution. Here in Australia, we're slowly and surely selecting for smart, road-wary kangaroos.

I saw one pick up a rock and throw it at my car the other day. It's only a matter of time.

tribes who hunt for subsistence worship the animals they kill. Us "evolved" societies just put them in a box and then shoot them in the head.

we evolved the brain to deal with the world in a much better way, but we choose to fuck things up instead.

So if you want to talk about evolution, you need to worry that our "progress" might be selfdarwinisation. for example, our "progress" in the area of meat production has led to diabetes and heart disease. Go figure.

Am I the only one who was sad to see the bird twitching on the ground?

I mean sure, she was overreacting, to the point where at first I thought the whole thing was staged, but when they showed the bird fluttering around on the ground, any chance of me laughing was over.

I'm not going to read all the comments, probably been said already.

I HATE this sort of insane overreaction to things. This sort of over the top, mental flip out causes harm in situations that there may not have been any, or cause pain and suffering where there already was some, but need not be any more.

Yes, you hit a bird, yes it's not nice to kill something accidentally. But if you're going to stop, kill the fucking thing, don't video it slowly dying in agony. You are being far more cruel letting it die like that.

I don't know, I think to have a breakdown like that you need to be more then sheltered and innocent. I bet the girl has some pent up guilt over other things. Perhaps she's having flashbacks to other animals or people she's accidentally murdered. . . Yes that would make sense.

i disagree, she clearly started freaking out before the camera came out, and you know when girls get in that state, it's hard to come down. it looks extreme but it's just a feedback loop that gets worse and worse. i didn't sense any showing off for youtube, she was just suddenly confronted by the fact that she had mortally wounded something cute. i am guessing if she ever saw an abbatoir she would become instantly vegetarian, as some people above have pointed out.

How hard is it to scoop the bird up and drive by a vet. It's actually DOING something instead of panicking. The bird looks toast though poor thing.

Now if she's not a vegetarian, then she's an idiot to react that way.
